2021 Rockpile Primitivo – Sonoma County
The Rockpile AVA is perched high above Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County. Ranching and hunting dominated this area for over a century before Rockpile’s legacy of grape growing began. First planted in 1992, Rockpile became an official AVA in 2002. Presently, it contains 15,000 acers of land with only 160 planted to grapes. It is most notably known as one of Sonoma County’s best regions for Zinfandel. Long thought to be the same as Zinfandel, Primitivo is now known to be the Italian sibling to the more well-known American varietal. Celebrating the second release of our Rockpile Primitivo, 2021 opens with subtle notes of underripe black cherry and raspberry before leaning into a slightly more complex minerality. A lighter bodied wine when compared to our other Zinfandels, this vintage perfectly encapsulates the Rockpile region with its bright refreshing acidity and full round tannins.
